As the Syrian civil war enters its sixth year in 2017, many of us can only watch helplessly at the plight of the people caught in the crossfire. The war has subsequently been called a failure of the international community as we are nowhere near seeing the atrocities ending in Syria. With the fall of East Aleppo we saw messages from civilians in Aleppo begging for help (and for their lives), not sure if they would be alive the next day.
At the end of the day, it is the innocent people of Syria who continue to die – those who were unable to flee to safety to neighbouring countries or aren’t able to apply for refugee status or simply chose to stay in their country in hopes that the war will soon subside.
Feeling helpless, I have compiled a list of ways we can help Syrian refugees from Pakistan – to help on a larger scale would require being able to create policies for the crisis or magically end the war. Unfortunately, this isn’t fantasy, but for now saving the life of one person can itself be considered a victory.
Let them know they’re not alone – it’s the easiest thing you can do. If you don’t have the resources to donate, empathize with them and tell them you care. It may make a difference in the life of someone who sees war and bloodshed as a normal part of their day.
Alkhidmat Foundation Pakistan is acting as an autonomous, non-political, non-for-profit organization. They have conducted several international relief operations in Nepal and Burma. Having helped Syrian refugees in Turkey, the foundation is now looking for donations to help those directly affected in Syria.
NuDay Syria works on the ground to provide food to those who need it the most and empowering and aiding those who have no one to provide for them.
7.5 million Syrian children have been affected by the crisis. Focusing its efforts on the displaced children of Syria, Save The Children allows you to sponsor a child or donate for necessities such as winter clothes, diapers, soap, food and other hygienic items.
5. Donate directly to Syrian Refugees through KickStarter and GoFundMe
If you know of a family or organization in need of help, you can help them by starting crowdfunding campaigns. Kickstarter and GoFundMe campaigns directly help refugees trying to settle in new countries and trying to become economically independent. Many refugees struggle to find work and the goal is to give them opportunities that allows them to rebuild their lives and create thriving communities. There have been some successful campaigns including one aiding a refugee family settle in Lebanon. In partnership with UNHCR Kickstarter itself completed a successful funding campaign.
