Younis Khan; a trip down memory lane

As the series with West Indies comes to an end, the Pakistani cricket team is left with a gaping hole. Not one but two team veterans have bid us farewell.

We already recapped some of Misbah’s moments in our video, so this post is dedicated to Younis Khan. Younis who retires at the age of 39, started playing for the Pakistani cricket team in 2000. For 17 years his career saw many lows and some massive highs, but it won’t be wrong to say that despite what Younis has seen and faced as a Pakistani cricketer, his loyalty has never wavered. In the years Younis has played for Pakistan, he has become the face of perseverance and loyalty for cricket fans.

Younis was captain during one of Pakistani cricket’s most difficult periods. Players being accused of match fixing and player rebellions’ due to which he had to relinquish test captaincy. In 2007, former coach of the Pakistani team Bob Woolmer passed away, only a few hours after Pakistan’s shocking exit from the 2007 World Cup – Younis who considered Woolmer a father figure suffered deeply. And it was in 2010 that Younis was ‘banned indefinitely’ from Pakistani cricket by the PCB due to “infighting which brought down the whole team during the tour of Australia in January.”

Despite all this, it would not be wrong to say Younis has emerged as one of Pakistan’s greatest batsmen of all time. He has broken records and brought home victories. So let’s recap five of Younis Khan’s best moments from his 17-year-long career.

5. Scored a century on his test debut

Ah, the moment we all collectively knew this man was special. When for his test debut all the way back in 2000 (against Sri Lanka), Younis scored a century.

4. 171 not out

In 2015, Younis silenced critics who thought his age was a hindrance for his ability. At the age 0f 37, Younis scored 171 runs against Sri Lanka. Pakistan were chasing a large total of 377. With this brilliant display of his cricket prowess, Younis also became the first cricketer to score five fourth-innings centuries. He moved past cricketing legends Sunil Gavaskar, Ricky Ponting, Ramnaresh Sarwan and Graeme Smith who have all scored four.

3. Winning the T20 World Cup 2009 as captain

Pakistan has won the T20 World Cup only once and it was under the captaincy of Younis Khan. This was also Pakistan’s first world title since Imran Khan and his team lifted the World Cup in 1992, so yeah a pretty big deal.

2. 313 runs against Sri Lanka

What is with Younis and Sri Lanka, we must ask ourselves. Back in 2009, Younis Khan scored a whopping 313 runs in a test match against Sri Lanka. This is the third highest total by a Pakistan batsman in test cricket.

1. First Pakistani to score 10,000 runs in test cricket

In his 17 year career, Younis has scored over 10,000 runs in test cricket – the highest for any Pakistani. On a sidenote, Younis is also the ONLY test cricketer to have scored centuries against all 11 countries that play test cricket.

After that trip down memory lane, let’s just say we’re going to miss Younis, his loyalty, his faith and of course that contagious smile! Fare thee well!
